| Eskayef achieves UK MHRA accreditation. |
Eskayef Bangladesh Ltd, one of the leading manufacturers and exporters of pharmaceutical products, has won accreditation from the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for its new plant at Tongi.
The accreditation will allow Eskayef to export tablets, capsules and granules to the UK and other European countries. The opportunity will let the company develop itself as a global supplier and enhance its contribution to foreign currency earnings.
The MHRA approval is one of the toughest to win and this approval will also help Eskayef to enter the highly regulated markets of Australia, South Africa and GCC countries. The company is in process to export finished drugs to the European countries.
Evaluation for MHRA accreditation is a complex process. Inspectors from the UK agency inspected Eskayef's plant, machinery and equipment, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) system, purified water system and effluent treatment system. The inspectors also audited the design of the company's manufacturing plant and found Eskayef compliant with the UK's Good Manufacturing Practice.
Eskayef is one of the youngest, but fastest growing, companies in both local and international markets. The company exports pharmaceutical products to around 15 countries across four continents.
Eskayef believes Bangladesh has the ability to grab a larger share of the international market for pharmaceutical products because of low manufacturing costs. The WTO agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) has enabled Bangladesh to manufacture generic drugs for exporting to other less developed countries.
The country earned $32.97 million by exporting pharmaceutical products to around 67 countries in the first nine months of the current fiscal year, registering a 60 percent increase in export earnings from the pharmaceutical sector over the same period a year ago. |

| Eskayef launches Neorice, the rice based oral saline |
Eskayef Bangladesh Limited has recently launched rice based oral saline Neorice® after their successful launching of reduce osmolarity oral saline (Neosaline®), which they launched as the pioneer brand. Rice based oral rehydration saline is the latest rehydration therapy within the chain of oral rehydration Saline’s chronological development.
In Neorice glucose is replaced with processed rice powder so that it exert lower osmotic pressure but provide more glucose than reduced osmolarity oral saline. Because Neorice provide more glucose in a slow conversion from processed rice, it carries more sodium and potassium than reduced osmolarity oral saline.
The osmotic pressure of Neorice is much lower than that of plasma, as a result fluid passed from intestine to the plasma, reducing water loss during severe diarrhea of cholera. It also reduces the frequency of stool output and vomiting.
To reconstitute the saline the powder of the sachet should be poured into ½ liter of water and then boiled for 5 minutes. After cooling the solution, it can be used for the patient. Once reconstituted, the solution can be used for 12 hours.
Neorice is available in all chemist shops allover Bangladesh in sachet of 20’s box. |

| Eskayef celebrates International Doctors’ Day for the first time in Bangladesh. |
On March 30, 2008, Eskayef Bangladesh Limited, a leading pharmaceutical company of the country has introduced for the 1st time in Bangladesh the concept of celebrating the ‘international Doctors’ day’. It was observed by sharing the greetings with the doctors through cards, flowers etc and paying good wishes through print & electronic media. The doctors were found overwhelmed with joy to know that they have an exclusive day, which is being observed internationally over decades and thanked Eskayef for its pioneering role to introduce it in Bangladesh. Acknowledging the very challenging job of providing the health care services to the mammoth 15 crore people of Bangladesh by only 43 thousand registered doctors (3,100 populations per doctor), Eskayef has taken the initiative to start the culture of thanking the doctors for their professional expertise and compassionate care to the mankind. The first Doctors’ Day was observed on March 30, 1933 in the USA. The idea came from Ms. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Barrow County, Georgia physician Charles B. Almond, M.D. The date was the anniversary of the first use of general anaesthetic in surgery. In 1958 the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution to make it a national event. On March 30, 1842, Crawford W. Long, M.D., of Jefferson, Georgia, USA administered the first ether anesthesia to his patient Mr. James Venable and then operated to remove a tumor from that man’s neck. The man would swear later that he felt nothing during the surgery and was not aware it was over until he awoke. Dr. Long’s history-making achievement on that day, and the continuous efforts by physicians to alleviate human suffering in the 166 years since then, have become the basis for celebrating International Doctors Day each year. |
